Supply Chain Value Creation in the Cold Chain

Supply Chain Value Creation in the Cold Chain

How does value actually get created across the cold chain—and where does collaboration make the biggest impact?

Wednesday, November 19, 2025 | 5:00 p.m.
Schreiber Center, 16 E. Pearson Street, Room 908, Chicago

To close out our 2025 Fall Semester Speaker Series, Mathew Moore, Vice President of Global Market Strategy at Americold, joined the Supply Chain and Sustainability Center for a focused look at how value is created across the cold chain through strategic collaboration. He offered a grounded view of key cold chain dynamics and stakeholders, unpacking what “end-to-end” optimization really means and separating persistent myths from practical realities.

Mathew walked through why the cold chain is such a critical part of the food system and highlighted several key takeaways:

  • Temperature control is nuanced. Protecting product quality and safety depends on managing multiple temperature zones—not just “keeping things cold.”
  • Visibility is essential. Americold’s i-3PL platform allows customers to track inventory, orders, KPIs, and appointments in real time, creating better control and decision-making across the network.
  • North American connections are getting stronger. Americold’s partnership with CPKC—the only rail network connecting the U.S., Canada, and Mexico—is helping accelerate refrigerated freight across borders.
  • Investment is reshaping capacity. From new refrigerated containers to a major import/export hub, Americold is expanding infrastructure to add capacity and reduce delays.
  • Food safety comes first. FDA temperature standards informed everything from container design to transit planning and quality control in the examples he shared.

Mathew also discussed how collaboration can unlock both operational and strategic value across the supply chain, including how organizations like CPKC and COLD are working together to rethink how food moves between the U.S. and Mexico. Together, these insights showed how companies like Americold and CPKC are modernizing the cold chain and making food movement safer, faster, and more reliable.

Fall 2025 Series Highlights

As we wrap up the fall semester, we extend a big thank-you to everyone who joined us for our Fall 2025 Supply Chain Speaker Series. We had a strong mix of speakers, thoughtful conversations, and a committed community showing up each week. Your engagement truly made the series what it was.

September 24

Inside the McDonald’s Supply Chain

We kicked things off by taking a behind-the-scenes look at how McDonald’s manages sourcing, distribution, and quality at a global scale. A surprising amount of coordination goes into keeping those operations running smoothly.

November 5

Feeding America: Hunger Is a Logistics Problem

Feeding America shifted the conversation in a big way, showing that hunger in the U.S. isn’t just about food availability—it’s really about logistics, access, and the systems that support communities.

November 12

When Law Meets Logistics

In this session, we explored how legal frameworks, compliance, and policy shape supply-chain decisions every day. It was a great reminder of how closely connected operations and regulations truly are.

November 19

Supply Chain Value Creation in the Cold Chain

Our final event of the semester featured Mathew Moore, Vice President of Global Market Strategy at Americold, who broke down how value is created across the cold chain—and why temperature-controlled logistics matter so much.
